Tree Safety
& Risk Management
As trees grow, so does the potential for tree risk and safety issues
Tree Risk and Duty of Care
By taking reasonable care to assess and manage tree risk, tree owners and managers can help demonstrate that appropriate steps have been taken to manage tree-related risk.
Tree risk assessment and ongoing tree safety inspection are essential parts of responsible tree management, particularly as trees mature and the potential for structural defects, branch failure and other hazards increases.
Ongoing inspection and proportionate management are therefore particularly important in public spaces, parks, estates and visitor landscapes where managers have a duty of care to people using these spaces.
We use QTRA to assess & manage risk
We are accredited Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) surveyors, providing objective and proportionate tree risk assessments to support informed and defensible tree management decisions.
We make practical and cost-effective tree risk management recommendations. From removing deadwood to crown reduction or pruning.
However, we do not carry out any tree works ourselves, so you can rest assured that we will only specify the works required to manage risk.
By identifying tree health and structural issues early, we can often help retain trees through appropriate management before defects develop into more significant problems.
Our tree risk assessments help clients:
- Reduce the likelihood of tree-related damage or personal injury
- Support tree retention through informed management
- Identify defects and decline at an early stage
- Demonstrate reasonable and proportionate management of tree risk
- Evidence legal compliance and duty of care responsibilities
Advanced Tree Risk Investigation & Decay Detection
Visual tree assessment forms the foundation of tree risk management, but some defects and structural weaknesses cannot be fully understood from external inspection alone.
Where further investigation is required, we use advanced diagnostic techniques including PiCUS Sonic Tomography, Resistograph testing and Air Spade investigation to assess internal decay, structural integrity and root condition.
PiCUS Sonic Tomography enables non-invasive investigation of internal tree condition, helping to determine the extent and significance of decay without unnecessary damage to the tree.
These investigations can provide valuable evidence to support decisions on tree retention, management or removal.
Advanced investigation is particularly valuable for:
- Veteran and ancient trees
- High-value landscape trees
- Trees in high-occupancy locations
- Trees where retention is desirable but structural condition is uncertain
- Situations where management decisions must be robustly justified
We also undertake tree pest and disease investigations, diagnosing issues affecting individual trees or wider tree populations to support long-term tree health, biosecurity and management planning.
We are also experienced in using TreeCalc, a structural tree analysis system used to model the likelihood of stem failure in trees affected by advanced decay or hollowing. Together with diagnostic tools such as PiCUS Sonic Tomography, this can provide additional evidence to help refine tree risk ratings and support proportionate management decisions.
