PiCUS Sonic Tomography
Tree Decay Investigations

A PiCUS Sonic Tomography investigation can be the difference between retaining a tree or losing it.

Asset 1@2x

Tree decline can indicate internal decay, structural weakness or root dysfunction, particularly where the cause is not externally visible.

We provide specialist tree decay detection and tree risk assessment services using advanced diagnostic techniques, including PiCUS Sonic Tomography, to assess internal structure and stability.

Early diagnosis of decay and defect supports informed decisions on tree retention, management or intervention, improving both safety and long-term tree health.

Where required, tree health investigations can form part of a formal tree risk assessment, or support reports for protected trees including Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and Conservation Area notifications.

As specialist arboriculturists, we use a range of diagnostic methods from expert visual tree assessment through to advanced internal investigation using PiCUS Sonic Tomography, Resistograph Microdrill and Air Spade techniques.

Rest assured, we'll get to the root of the problem

PiCUS Sonic Tomography allows us to assess the internal condition of a tree without invasive damage, providing a detailed understanding of decay extent and structural integrity beyond what is visible externally.

Our arboriculturists are fully trained in PiCUS data collection and interpretation, ensuring results are translated into clear, practical management guidance.

Where required, we complement this with Resistograph Microdrill testing to confirm internal resistance patterns, and Air Spade excavation to investigate  root system condition.

We also undertake pest and disease diagnosis and can carry out individual tree assessments or wider strategic surveys to understand the impact of disease within tree populations.

Our reports provide clear, evidence-based recommendations to support confident and proportionate tree management decisions.

Our PiCUS decay detection service means safer tree management

  • PiCUS surveys can reveal hidden decay and hollowing
  • Findings can justify removal of a tree or support its retention
  • PiCUS results are objective and repeatable so can be used to monitor tree health over time
