Project
Tree Inventory & Management Plan for York Gate Garden
Client
Perennial York Gate Garden
Background
York Gate is a one-acre Grade II registered garden near Leeds, managed by Perennial.
Created from former farmland by the Spencer family in the 1950s, the garden is laid out as a series of distinctive but connected garden rooms influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement.
Trees are an important part of the garden’s character, contributing structure, colour, texture and contrast throughout the seasons.
Trees at York Gate are managed in a wide variety of forms, including standards, topiary, espaliers, hedges and bonsai.
Features such as the iconic Yew Sails, espaliered Atlas cedar, Nut Walk and long-established Bonsai Court demonstrate the importance of trees to the garden’s design and identity.
The garden is open to the public and features in the National Garden Scheme every year.
How we helped
Enviroscope prepared York Gate Garden’s first comprehensive tree inventory, providing a detailed record of the garden’s tree collection and its distinctive range of species, forms and locations.
We also carried out a QTRA tree safety and risk assessment, considering the trees in the context of a garden open to the public. The assessment identified tree work required to manage risk and maintain the trees in good condition.
We prepared a prioritised tree management programme which considers more than simply tree safety. Proposed works also aim to promote good tree health and form, while helping to retain the distinctive character of York Gate’s treescape and inform its longer-term management.
