Background

Historic Bulwick Hall in Northamptonshire is surrounded by its fine gardens, ancient parkland treescape and productive arable and forestry. Informed by conservation-orientated principles, the land has been actively managed by the Estate for over 400 years.

We were delighted to have been part of the multi-disciplinary team preparing the baseline studies to inform ambitious land management plans under Countryside Stewardship. Feasibility Study developing an exciting Estate Management Plan which included pioneering rewilding work and plans for tree and parkland restoration.

How we helped

Enviroscope carried out a baseline study of trees, orchards and woodland at Bulwick Estate.

Starting with a desk study we delved into the history and origins of trees at the site by studying old maps and archival materials. We then supplemented this knowledge with tree survey and age assessments in the field. From this we were able to provide estimated planting dates and tree age and get a picture of the development of the treescape over the centuries from pre 1750 to the 21st century.

Our work informed the team’s knowledge of the development of the treescape over time, its species composition and the implication of past and current management on the Estate’s trees.

We used our expertise in parkland landscape restoration to provide a prioritised programme of work to manage trees in decline and promote good future growth and development of trees in the context of the site.

Taking into account adaptations required for climate change and tree disease prevalence we made recommendations on tree species and replanting options as part of the landscape restoration.
