Background

Norton Lea Hospital is a disused site in Boston, Lincolnshire being redeveloped as a state-of-the-art mental Acute Inpatients Unit.

The site contains numerous high quality trees that include several protected by Tree Preservation Order. The most important tree on the site is a mature and characterful cork oak tree that is identified as a veteran tree on the Ancient Tree Inventory.

The redevelopment has included demolition and construction works close to protected mature trees. We have provided of expert arboricultural advice on these works close to sensitive trees, and monitored these works to ensure the trees thrive to enhance the new healthcare facility.

How we helped

Enviroscope were commissioned to carry out a tree survey of the derelict site in 2021. The tree survey was carried out in accordance with BS5837:2012. The survey identified a number of high quality trees on the site, including some protected by TPO and a historic veteran tree. We worked closely with the demolition contractors and redevelopment design team to ensure that the constraints arising from the trees were allowed for at an early stage in the project.

We carried out an Arboricultural Impact Assessment of both the demolition and Construction phases, and produced Arboricultural Method Statements to allow the works to proceed with minimal impact on the protected trees.

It was identified at an early stage that the props supporting branches on the veteran cork oak tree had not been maintained and were unlikely to support the tree during vibration arising from the demolition of a nearby building. We specified a scheme to maintain the propos and supervised contractors carry out this work. At all stages, we have liaised constructively with the Council regarding trees protected by TPO.

The scheme has require regular monitoring and we have worked as an Arboricultural Clerk of Works. This has included monitoring of tree protection measures, and supervision of works close to the trees such as removal of foundations and ground investigation works for asbestos.

We lever the benefits of technology on all our projects. This ensures the data we collate and the reports and plans we provide are accurate, reliable and future proof, securing a long-term return on your investment in our tree services.
